We Scored 50 Companies on AI Visibility. Here's What the Top 10% Do Differently.

We scored 50 enterprise B2B companies across 5 sectors on whether AI platforms recommend them to buyers. The AI Visibility Benchmark 2026 measured four dimensions: Citation Presence, Entity Recognition, Content Structure, and Citation Breadth.

The average total score was 82.2 out of 100. Most companies looked healthy.

But the top 10% — the companies scoring 90 or above — had something the rest did not. Every single one had a Citation Presence score of 22 out of 25 or higher. That is the dimension that determines whether AI names you when a buyer searches your category.

44% of the companies we scored sat at 2 out of 25 on that same dimension. The minimum.

The gap between the top 10% and the bottom 44% was not budget. It was not team size. It was not content volume. It was three specific patterns.


Pattern 1: They Exist in Comparison Content They Did Not Create

The highest-scoring companies appeared in buyer guides, review platforms, and competitive analyses published by third parties. Not content they commissioned. Not guest posts they wrote. Content that other organisations created to compare options in their category.

Enterprise SaaS companies scored 24.4 out of 25 on Citation Presence. IT services scored 8.0. The structural difference: SaaS exists in a comparison ecosystem. G2, Capterra, TrustRadius, and dozens of independent review sites publish detailed comparisons of SaaS products. When a buyer asks AI "what is the best marketing automation platform," AI draws from those comparison pages.

Professional services and IT services lack this ecosystem. Nobody publishes "top 10 IT managed services providers" with feature tables and scoring. So AI has entity data (it knows the company exists) but no comparison data (it has no basis to recommend one over another).

What the top 10% did that the bottom 44% did not:

  • Active presence on industry-specific review and comparison platforms
  • Participation in analyst reports and buyer guides (Forrester, Gartner, or industry-specific equivalents)
  • Partner and integration pages on other companies' websites that reference them by name
  • Directory listings in every relevant industry association

The signal is not about being on your own website. It is about being on other people's websites in a context that compares and recommends.


Pattern 2: Their Entity Data Is Consistent Across Sources

AI platforms cross-reference information across multiple sources before making a recommendation. If your company description, category, and positioning are consistent across your website, LinkedIn, directories, press coverage, and partner pages, AI treats that as a validation signal.

The top-scoring companies had near-identical descriptions of what they do across every source. The same category language. The same positioning. The same core service description.

The lower-scoring companies had fragmented entity data. Their website said one thing. Their LinkedIn said another. Their directory listings used different category labels. Their press coverage described them in terms that did not match their current positioning.

AI does not resolve inconsistencies. It deprioritises them. If the signal is noisy, AI recommends the company with the cleaner signal.

What the top 10% did:

  • Consistent company description across website, LinkedIn, Crunchbase, industry directories, and partner pages
  • Same category keywords used everywhere (not "consulting" on one platform and "advisory services" on another)
  • Regular audits of third-party listings to correct outdated information
  • A named positioning statement that appeared verbatim across multiple sources

Pattern 3: They Published Named, Structured Frameworks

The highest-scoring companies had intellectual property that AI could extract and reference by name. A methodology. A framework. A model. Something with a name, defined steps, and published documentation.

AI cannot cite an unnamed process. "We have a unique approach" is invisible. "The [Company] Method: a 5-step process for [outcome]" is citable. AI extracts the name, the steps, and the description, and uses them as the basis for a recommendation.

The Signal Source Method follows the same pattern. Six named steps. Published documentation. Structured output. These are not marketing tactics. They are citation architecture.

What the top 10% did:

  • Named their core methodology or approach (not just described it)
  • Published the framework with explicit steps, dimensions, or components
  • Used the framework name consistently across all content
  • Included methodology sections in research and thought leadership (sample size, criteria, process)

What the bottom 44% did:

  • Described their approach in general terms ("our proven process," "our unique methodology")
  • Did not publish methodology or framework documentation
  • Used different names for the same process across different pages
  • Produced content without structured, extractable intellectual property

The Compound Effect

These three patterns are not independent. They compound.

When you appear in third-party comparison content (Pattern 1), with consistent entity data (Pattern 2), and a named framework AI can extract (Pattern 3), the citation signal multiplies. Each source that references your named framework with consistent positioning reinforces the others.

The companies scoring 90+ were not doing more. They were doing three specific things that created a self-reinforcing citation pattern.

The companies scoring 2/25 on citation were often doing more — more blog posts, more social content, more website pages. But all of it was on their own domain. The signal was loud in one place and silent everywhere else.
